  • Your SEA contract: It might be obvious, but many people sign it without taking an in-depth look, which can land you in trouble if you don’t fully understand it.

  • The crew handbook: The crew handbook may be written by the Captain or management company and lays out procedures and guidelines to be followed onboard. Having a good understanding of this will not only keep you out of trouble but could also gain you recognition and a potential promotion.

  • The fire plan: This will be posted in common areas, in your crew cabin, and by the gangway or passerelle. It outlines the locations of emergency exits, muster stations, and the location of firefighting equipment such as extinguishers and fire hoses.
